Jobs-to-be-Done Framework to ChatGPT 101

Understanding Jobs-to-be-Done

The Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) framework helps you understand customer needs by focusing on the progress they're trying to make in a particular circumstance. Rather than thinking about products or features, JTBD helps you think about the job a customer is trying to accomplish.

The classic JTBD statement follows this pattern:

When I _______ (situation), I want to _______ (motivation/action), so I can _______ (desired outcome).

This framework shifts thinking from "what product do I build?" to "what job is the customer trying to get done?"

Generate Your Jobs-to-be-Done Analysis

Use the form below to define your Job-to-be-Done statement. We'll generate a ChatGPT prompt that helps you identify up to 10 solutions a customer might reasonably hire to accomplish this job.

Why This Matters

By framing customer needs through the JTBD lens, you can:

  • Identify unexpected competitors: Solutions from different industries might be hired for the same job
  • Understand switching behavior: Customers "fire" one solution and "hire" another when their job changes
  • Guide product development: Build features that help customers make better progress
  • Improve positioning: Speak to the job, not just the product features

Going Deeper

Once you've generated your JTBD prompt and received ChatGPT's analysis, consider:

  1. Validate the solutions: Are these solutions actually being hired by customers?
  2. Identify gaps: What jobs are underserved by current solutions?
  3. Map the competitive set: Which solutions compete most directly with each other?
  4. Understand substitution: What are customers using today before they find a purpose-built solution?

The JTBD framework is powerful because it reveals that you're not just competing with direct product alternatives—you're competing with any solution (including doing nothing) that helps customers make progress.
